10 things no one tells you about El Calafate (but you should know before you go)

Traveling to El Calafate is a dream for many. And yes, the famous Perito Moreno Glacier is on another level —but beyond that, there’s a whole world of adventures that no one talks about. If you're planning your trip or already booked your flight, this off-the-record guide might just save your trip (and probably your instagram stories too).

1. El Calafate is NOT just the glacier

Sure, Perito Moreno is stunning. But if you only come for that, you’re missing half the fun. Think kayaking, epic boat trips, hiking trails, ancient rock art caves, off-road 4x4 tours across the steppe… and even birdwatching! El Calafate is your gateway to tons of adventures.

2. The wind is basically the main character

Yes, Patagonian wind deserves its own Instagram account. It’ll mess up your hair, push you around —and if you don’t respect it, it’ll knock you over. Bring a windbreaker (no excuses), tight sunglasses, and accept it: you’ll be rocking the “tornado look” in your photos. It’s part of the charm. Just whatever you do… don’t even think of naming it!

There are EPIC photo spots beyond the glacier walkways

Want something different for your feed? Head to the Mirador de los Cóndores, visit Laguna Nimez at sunset, or jump on a boat tour to capture the glaciers from the water. Fewer crowds, more likes.

4. You can eat well in El Calafate withoutt blowing your budget

Not everything in El Calafate is haute cuisine, there are also cool restaurants, homemade food with local flavour and breweries with budget-friendly promotions. If you get organised, you can enjoy yourself without depriving yourself of anything. Ask us about our favourite places -those that are not in all the guide books.

5. Nightlife? Yes, and it has its own vibe

No, it’s not Buenos Aires —but there are bars with good music, craft brews, and travelers from around the world. Go out at least one night! The mix of backpackers, locals, and people looking for good conversations always makes for great stories.

6. Some tours feel straight out of an adventure movie

Want to walk on a glacier? Navigate among icebergs? Ride across the steppe in a 4x4? Here, it’s all possible. You don’t need to be super fit or crazy rich. Just choose the right adventure and go with the flow.

7. Patagonian wildlife is a whole thing

Don’t underestimate the guanacos, foxes, and flamingos. They’re the real locals, and you’ll definitely run into them. If you're into birds, Laguna Nimez is your go-to. Bring your camera —or just keep your eyes wide open.

8. The weather? All four seasons... in one day

Sun, snow, and wind —yes, all in the same day. The trick? Dress in layers. Always. And check the weather the same day. Never trust a forecast from a week ago. Spoiler alert: it won't come true.

9. Getting around town is easy

El Calafate is small, walkable, and everything is close. For tours, make sure you know your pick-up times —they’re usually early. No, there’s no Uber, but you’ll find taxis, or you can rent a bike or car to explore freely.

10. Your trip can be unforgettable

The key? Organize everything with a local agency (hi, that’s us 👋). You’ll avoid surprises, get your bookings sorted in advance, and have real support once you're here. Plus, you’ll be helping the people who actually live and love this place. Win-win.
